Ricky’s story
I solo developed this virtual reality fire training simulator for a professional fire safety training company in the USA.
Designed to be experienced alongside a trained professional, participants in this simulation learn and physically practice appropriate fire extinguisher technique (the “PASS method”) through a virtual household kitchen oil fire scenario.
To create this training simulator, I studied recordings of real house fires to better understand the burn timings, patterns of spread, and what moments the smoke starts to obscure vision.
One aspect I’m particularly proud of is the natural support for both left- and right-handed participants by simply reaching, grabbing, holding, and pulling with either. At the time, most VR experiences required players to select a dominant hand through a specific UI before beginning.
The project combined game development techniques, immersive interaction, and subject-specific training requirements in a single-purpose VR experience of a high-risk environment where quality training and practice can save lives.
