Ricky’s story

I was approached by the Snowy Hydro SouthCare rescue service to help them spread their message of safety, emergency preparedness, and to help kids learn about the rescue service and how it all works. A secondary goal was to raise community awareness of the service to aid in its funding and donation campaigns.

Together, we created Mountain Rescue, a fun applied game for primary-school-aged children to play, learn from, and lead rescue missions in. As players work through the mission, they learn about basic safety, things to do in an emergency, and the kinds of people and jobs that make up the Snowy Hydro SouthCare helicopter rescue service.

This game was developed in consultation with Snowy Hydro SouthCare and experts in the ACT ambulance service, combining an original rescue adventure with accurate safety and emergency response information.

As well as designing and developing the game, I wrote the character dialogue and led voice recording sessions with nine SouthCare staff, who played roles including doctors, paramedics, aircrew, pilots, and emergency dispatchers. I also commissioned and managed four artists across 2D character art, 3D modelling, and illustration.

In bittersweet news, this one isn’t available for you to play

In the same week the game was due to release, the SouthCare rescue service received a significant funding boost from the ACT government, ending its Snowy Hydro sponsorship and with it this particular education and awareness product.
